Trusting God for the Open Window

Many of us have heard the saying “when God closes a door, he always opens a window.” It is a nice catchy little saying; a platitude to be spoken when something doesn’t go the way you had planned or hoped. It never really meant all that much to me until now.

While we were on vacation last week, my husband got a phone call from the owner of the company he worked for telling him that they could not make payroll (he was to be paid in two days) and the company was closing and filing for bankruptcy. We’re 6 hours away from home with two days left in our vacation and we find out he is now unemployed. Now, I would like to tell you that my initial reaction was to pray, but it wasn’t. My practicality won out and I told him to file for unemployment immediately.

Before I move on with the story, I have to share some background. My husband has a degree in music for audio recording. His dream has always been to open his own recording studio and be able to work for himself. He was currently working as a video editor as that is something he sort of fell into while in college.

So back to the story, before the end of the day, my husband had been put into contact with at least 2 people who were in need of freelance work. By the end of the next day he had an interview set up and was in contact with a friend who needed ongoing video work done. On the following day, a supervisor at the company put him in touch with someone who they had been working with at the company to finish their video. Now it is a week later and he has had more opportunities for freelance work than he usually gets in a year.

We were talking a few nights ago and thinking that it is amazing how God works. If these opportunities had come about while he was employed full-time he may not have been able to take advantage of them. But because of the door closing at his job (literally) a window was opened to be in contact with people that he would have never met. Additionally, he had been in a process waiting for another job to come through and literally had not heard anything since January. As God would have it, someone from that process contacted him this week letting him that he is getting closer to the end of the process and that job may be able to begin soon.

While he does not have a permanent full-time job yet. We can trust in our God knowing that if he able to open so many windows in so little time, that He has what we need within reach. We just have to continue to be patient and wait for his timing.
