I am trying something new. I bought a book of writing prompts a few months back from 5Below to help jump start my creativity. The main reason why this blog was paused for so long, aside from the obvious business of caring for children, was the fact that I seemed to have a level of writer’s block. I felt like my children zapped all of my creativity. So today I am trying the first of the writing prompts in this book. I will be describing my surroundings to the best of my ability.
It is 7:21am I am sitting in my living room on the gray couch that we have had for several years. This couch has been through a lot, diaper changes, upset stomach, and spilled drinks and snacks. Thankfully for any guests that come through the cover is removable and washable. The feature in this room now is the new rug we put out 3 days ago. The room itself is gray black and white. I am not sure how I landed on black and white for the theme of this new house. But it was working for me…until it wasn’t. So when I found out two weeks ago that I won a rug! I used that opportunity to choose something with some color. The rug has a mostly black and cream design but has groups of coral colored poppies all over it giving a splash of light to the room. It’s great! And even better it’s washable, so hopefully it will stand up to the four kids who now love to have dance parties on it.
In the corner of the room is my husband’s desk. Underneath is all of his “work gear” camera bag, cords, etc and above is the wall of fame. What I like to call the most expensive wall in our house because it holds our college diplomas, along with my husband’s ministerial license certificate.
Toys are littered around the room. There is a toy bin, black and white with spaceships, in the corner but the desk that is overflowing with toys, but there is also a walker and play pen taking up space. The reusable bag that I used when shopping at Walmart last night is laying in the middle of the floor. Why? Because when I came in with the bag I exchanged it for the baby who was crawling to the door and went back outside to check how much gas I had in the van for our outing today. I feel like that is a clear picture of motherhood. I guess I could have picked the bag up after we got everyone to bed. But I honestly don’t think I even noticed it until just now. All it has in it is a few hair items that I purchased.
I am running out of time and I haven’t had a chance to mention the bookshelf, diaper cart and mismatched extra dining chairs that are house in this room, one of them holding a stack of cleaning rags and the other hosting books and our daily schedule poster. This is life for me. This is life with four kids. I am blessed and I know it and I try to remember to thank God for it everyday. Here come the kids!
