I made the mistake of buying my husband a bluetooth speaker for Father’s Day. By mistake I mean I’ve probably used it more than he has. Needless to say as I was playing music one morning Mercy Me’s “Even If” started playing. The chorus says,
I know You’re able
And I know You can
Save through the fire
With Your mighty hand
But even if You don’t
My hope is You alone
At that moment I was challenged. Do I really trust God that much? Can I truly say “I know You’re able to fix my problems, but even if You don’t I’ll still trust and hope in You.” I’m not sure if I really live like that. I think ideally I think I do, but as often happens when a bump comes in the road, I want to fix it myself.
It Is Well
As if that’s not enough. At the end of the song they sing “It Is Well With My Soul”. Have you ever heard the story of that song? It’s a long story, but to make it brief, the author, Horatio Spafford, lost all of his children. He had already faced financial ruin and the life of one child so his wife’s telegram that she was saved alone from a shipwreck devoted him. As he was traveling to his wife and passing the area of the shipwreck, he penned those words.
I can’t even imagine the depth of his pain. But he had the strength to say that despite my circumstances, it is well with my soul. If our hope is truly in Jesus we will be able to stay the same. No matter what you face in your life you can trust in the Lord.
Anchors My Soul
I am a fan of nautical decorations. My wedding was nautical themed. One of the verses you see a lot on nautical items is a portion of Hebrews 6:19, “Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul…” While this probably isn’t the perfect explanation of this verse, I believe it accurately represents what hope does. If we hope in the living God, we have an anchor. When the storms of life come and cause us to be shipwrecked, we are anchored in Him.
